âHowâs it going?â I asked as bro' came into our apartment two days after Krystalâs migraine. Weâd spent the night there, both tormented by her nearness, both wanting to do things that we werenât supposed to do, that weâd sworn we wouldnât do.
âPretty hard.â Santiago scoffed and nearly bent over with laughter. âThis fucking sucks, âNando.â
âI know, but weâve talked about this. I thought weâd agreed?â I could see the way tension tightened on my brotherâs face, a face that had just been laughing but was now serious.
Santiago nodded. âYeah, we did. Iâm just still worried itâs a game, you know?â He slid his left hand down his right arm, over the rose tattoo that blended into a screaming eagle down his arm. He and I were both covered in tattoos, something Mami had hated but had come to terms with.
Beneath our shirts, we had more tattoos, one that read âla vida locaâ, a rosary with a cross that hung right at our breastbones, a tribute to Mami. The same exact ink could be found on both of us, which didnât help people who were trying to tell them apart without knowing them.
Rather than being angry at Santiagoâs hesitance, I had to agree with it. This was one dangerous game and we all had to be sure about it. Iâd wanted to raise the subject of how we were going to do this with Santiago for a while now. Krystal had seemed interested, into it, and now all I needed was my brotherâs go ahead.
The problem was, we kept talking each other out of the whole thing. Weâd made a promise to her daddy, could we break that?
âItâs inevitable, I think, âNando. Sheâs like heroin to us, I think. We just canât say no.â Santiago leaned against the wall as if he was finally able to relax now that heâd admitted it.
From that moment in our kitchen on, I knew that it was going to happen. Neither one of us could tell her no, and we knew it.
I waited until Santiago looked up into his eyes.
âLook, Fernando,â Santiago started to say, but I didnât let him finish.
âSantiago, we both know we want her. We both know Krystal is something we canât resist, sheâs far too beautiful and way too much of a temptation.â I had decided to go straight into a blunt discussion about my final concern, thinking that it was best to get it out in the open.
âThat she is.â Santiago looked down at his clasped hands.
Then the entirety of my words replayed in my head.
âAnd what do we do about it? I mean, I know weâve agreed to let this happen, but Iâm still worried itâs going to go south.
I nodded, I could see the concern mixed with hope in Santiagoâs eyes and had to hide my smile.
âLook, broâ, I think what we really need to think about is how weâre going to do this. I mean, I know sheâs turned into the perfect little housewife lately, but sheâd also turned into one tempting little kitten.
