“How’s it going?” I asked as bro' came into our apartment two days after Krystal’s migraine. We’d spent the night there, both tormented by her nearness, both wanting to do things that we weren’t supposed to do, that we’d sworn we wouldn’t do.

“Pretty hard.” Santiago scoffed and nearly bent over with laughter. “This fucking sucks, ‘Nando.”

“I know, but we’ve talked about this. I thought we’d agreed?” I could see the way tension tightened on my brother’s face, a face that had just been laughing but was now serious.

Santiago nodded. “Yeah, we did. I’m just still worried it’s a game, you know?” He slid his left hand down his right arm, over the rose tattoo that blended into a screaming eagle down his arm. He and I were both covered in tattoos, something Mami had hated but had come to terms with.

Beneath our shirts, we had more tattoos, one that read ‘la vida loca”, a rosary with a cross that hung right at our breastbones, a tribute to Mami. The same exact ink could be found on both of us, which didn’t help people who were trying to tell them apart without knowing them.

Rather than being angry at Santiago’s hesitance, I had to agree with it. This was one dangerous game and we all had to be sure about it. I’d wanted to raise the subject of how we were going to do this with Santiago for a while now. Krystal had seemed interested, into it, and now all I needed was my brother’s go ahead.

The problem was, we kept talking each other out of the whole thing. We’d made a promise to her daddy, could we break that?

“It’s inevitable, I think, ‘Nando. She’s like heroin to us, I think. We just can’t say no.” Santiago leaned against the wall as if he was finally able to relax now that he’d admitted it.

From that moment in our kitchen on, I knew that it was going to happen. Neither one of us could tell her no, and we knew it.

I waited until Santiago looked up into his eyes.

“Look, Fernando,” Santiago started to say, but I didn’t let him finish.

“Santiago, we both know we want her. We both know Krystal is something we can’t resist, she’s far too beautiful and way too much of a temptation.” I had decided to go straight into a blunt discussion about my final concern, thinking that it was best to get it out in the open.

“That she is.” Santiago looked down at his clasped hands.

Then the entirety of my words replayed in my head.

“And what do we do about it? I mean, I know we’ve agreed to let this happen, but I’m still worried it’s going to go south.

I nodded, I could see the concern mixed with hope in Santiago’s eyes and had to hide my smile.

“Look, bro’, I think what we really need to think about is how we’re going to do this. I mean, I know she’s turned into the perfect little housewife lately, but she’d also turned into one tempting little kitten.
